The Fort Myers Fire Department and Lee County EMS responded to a fire at the A&D Scrap Material lot in Fort Myers on Tuesday.

A WINK News crew on the scene saw firefighters using a hose on their ladder to spray water down onto the fire from above.

The fire started at A&D Scrap Material, southwest of Hanson Street and Evan Avenue on Cranford Avenue in Fort Myers. Cranford Ave. is not shut down but has limited access due to the crews fighting the fire.

An employee of the scrapyard who asked not to be named said he heard an explosion before he saw the flames. He said he immediately evacuated.

The Fort Myers fire chief said they don’t know what started the fire but said it is 100% contained.

“Now we’re just going to do what we call mop up and protection of those big large tanks of those propane areas that we talked about. It will still be a little bit of an inconvenience for our public and our residents that are around, but everyone’s safe,” said Fort Myers Fire Chief Tracy McMillion.
