Convicted felon facing gun, drug possession charges after Cape Coral traffic stop

Cape Coral police say they have arrested a convicted felon after a traffic stop led them to find a gun and drugs in the man’s possession.

Police say they stopped a vehicle driven by Vincent Smith, 19, on Southeast 24th Avenue on Thursday because the vehicle was known to have been involved in a nearby crime. Police did not say what that crime was.

Officers had a police K-9 conduct a sniff test around Smith’s vehicle, which resulted in the dog alerting to the possible presence of narcotics.

Police searched the car and found a handgun in his vehicle, which was confirmed to have been stolen out of Texas. The handgun had a full magazine inserted. Two .223 caliber rounds were also found inside the vehicle.

Officers also found acetaminophen, oxycodone hydrochloride, methamphetamine, THC Oil, and more than 20 Grams of marijuana in Smith’s possession.

Smith and three others in the vehicle were transported to Lee County Jail on similar charges.

Smith faces charges of possession of a controlled substance, possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
