A big idea to bring a food truck park to a spot near downtown Fort Myers passes a major hurdle. The project was approved by the city’s board of adjusters Wednesday.

The restaurant Bruno’s of Brooklyn is spearheading the project.

The next step is to get the land ready. The city granted a conditional use approval that only requires an enhanced landscaping plan.

There is one catch, though. If any of the food trucks hope to sell alcohol, the owners have to get approval from the state.

“The words I live by every day are, ‘leave a legacy behind,'” said Cal Bruno.

Cal Bruno went before the board of adjusters on Wednesday to make his pitch to open a food truck park on a lot off McGregor Boulevard near the Edison Ford Estates and next to the West End at City Walk apartments.

“After Ian devastated our area, there are people that were displaced, including business and restaurant owners. This is a chance for them to get back in the game,” said Bruno.

The board agreed unanimously in favor of the food truck park.

“I’m not happy? I’m not for it. And I don’t think it should be allowed,” said Chris Blauvelt.

Blauvelt owns The Standard, a restaurant in downtown Fort Myers. He fears seven food trucks parked a short walk away will drive business away from his brick-and-mortar location and many others.

An attorney for Pinchers raised another concern to the board. “My major concern is not competition. It’s where are all these people going to park.”

Bruno’s loyal customers couldn’t be happier.

The next question then is when will the food truck park be open. The owners of Bruno’s say within the next two years.
