Fire at apartment building on Central Avenue in Fort Myers

Black smoke poured from a Fort Myers apartment building that caught fire on Central Avenue Tuesday night.

The fire started just after 8 p.m. on the third floor at 2825 Central Avenue in Fort Myers.

FMPD got to the scene at 8:11 p.m. and made evacuations, and got into the units. Fire units arrived on the scene at 8:14 p.m. and could see a plume of smoke before they began attacking the fire on the third floor of the building.

A mother and children from the unit got outside safely as soon as they smelled smoke. Some residents are displaced due to smoke, fire and water damage to their apartments.

The Red Cross is helping those impacted.

Firefighters now doing air quality checks, and the fire marshall is investigating the cause of the fire. The main priority is getting people back into their apartments
