The DeSoto County School District said it would begin opening schools to students again in two phases starting next week.

The district says the following schools will open during phase one on October 17.

  • Memorial Elementary School
  • West Elementary School
  • DeSoto Middle School
  • DeSoto Secondary School
  • DeSoto Virtual Academy

The second phase for the district is more complicated. The district hopes to open DeSoto County High School and Nocatee Elementary School between October 24 and November 7.

The two schools were heavily damaged during Hurricane Ian, and the school district says it will take longer to restore them to use. The district said it would have a better idea of the date these two schools can open sometime next week.

The DeSoto County School District said its mission is to safely welcome students and staff back into schools and facilities as soon as possible and to ensure the safety of all. They said an industrial hygienist is testing and clearing all facilities.
