A 45-year-old man was given a notice to appear in front of a judge after he confessed to looking through a young girl’s window as she was undressing on Sanibel.

Scott Garvin Shankster was caught on Aug. 22 at a home on the island after the victim’s father caught him wandering outside the girl’s window, according to a report from the Sanibel Police Department. Shankster told the victim’s father that he was on his property because he was crossing it to go to another home in the vicinity.

The homeowner then looked through his security footage and found the man had also prowled around his home on Aug. 18. The footage, from a Ring camera system, showed the “suspect crouching, moving southbound, towards the home, and approaching the juvenile’s bedroom window.”

Shankster is a nearby neighbor.

When Shankster was shown the video of him crouching near the girl’s window, he admitted to police what he had done.

The video was “becoming embarrassing for him,” Shankster told an officer, according to the report.

He said he wanted to speak “man to man” about what happened, the report states.

Shankster said he was riding his bicycle when he noticed the window had no blinds. He decided to approach the window and said he noticed a girl was undressing.

“I’m a man, I have my faults, I have my weakness and I look, and I get drawn in,” Shanker told the officer, according to the report.

Shankster was placed in handcuffs but the Sanibel Police Department determined he would be given a notice to appear instead of an arrest, according to the report.

He faces a charge of voyeurism first offense and loitering and prowling.

He has a court appearance on Tuesday.
