A 16-year-old was arrested after Collier deputies say he went on a crime spree in the Glades community.

According to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office, the teen, of East Naples, faces nine felony charges after detectives say he entered several homes through an unlocked rear sliding door and stole multiple items from sleeping victims.

The teen is also accused of stealing a vehicle and crashing it, causing about $3,500 in damage.

Forensic evidence led to the teen, the sheriff’s office said.

Detectives found some of the stolen items in a canal and returned them to the victims.

Collier Sheriff Kevin Rambosk offered the following tips to keep your home safe:

  • Keep your doors and windows locked, even when you are home. Turn on your alarm, if you have one.
  • Trim back bushes and trees from in front of windows and doors. They can provide a good hiding spot for burglars.
  • Sliding glass doors are vulnerable. Keep them locked. Special locks are available for better security.
  • Keep screen porch doors locked in addition to locking all doors in your home.
  • Light up your residence. Consider using sensors or motion lights.
  • Always lock car doors, even when parked in the garage. Remove valuables and never leave keys/fob inside.

Anyone with information on these crimes is asked to contact the Collier County Sheriff’s Office at 239-252-9300, or to remain anonymous call Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers at 1-800-780-8477.
