Construction in Fort Myers reveals artifacts that could date back to the 1800s.

The construction on Fowler St. will become a 275-unit apartment complex. When excavation began the artifacts, buried for years, were exposed unexpectedly.

But, according to Joanne Miller a member of the Southwest Florida Historical Society, for now, it’s ‘like a time-capsule.’

“This is a gift to us. This is a gift to the future… like a time-capsule,” Miller says.

As a member of the SWFL Historical Society, it’s her job to help preserve uncovered artifacts. Miller knows that Joann Fabrics doesn’t have nails like these. She believes they’re from the original Fort Myers.

“They’re not from Target, or JoAnne Fabrics. These are the real deal,” Miller says.

Then, Miller shared with WINK News reporter Michael Hudak a piece of a milk bottle from the 1800s.

“Yes, It’s amazing that something like this is even found,” Miller said.

Some like Seth Ford, an artifacts enthusiast, view the construction as destruction.

“I can’t help but think that the people that are developing there are essentially ruining archaeological sites,” Ford says. “First thing just to make sure that their progress will go ahead on their project without it being disturbed any more. And it hurts to look at this. I don’t like it at all.”
