8 people injured in vehicle crash on State Road 31 in Charlotte County, roadway reopens

A vehicle crash on State Road 31 in Charlotte County injured at least eight people and shut down the roadway for medevac helicopters to land.

The 2-vehicle crash happened at 9:41 a.m., just south of Bermont Road, according to Charlotte County Public Safety.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, one SUV with four passengers and its driver were heading south on SR-31. THat SUV crossed the centerline and veered into oncoming traffic.

Then, the front of the first SUV collided with the front of another SUV. The second SUV flipped and overturned.

The roadway reopened just after 1 p.m.

One person had to be extricated from the vehicle, Charlotte County Public Safety said.

Everyone involved in the crash did suffer injuries ranging from minor to critical. A male passenger in the first SUV and a female passenger in the second SUV suffered serious injuries. The 32-year-old woman driving the second SUV suffered critical injuries.

Two adult patients were airlifted to Gulf Coast Medical Center while another adult and three children were taken to the same hospital via ambulance, Charlotte County Public Safety said.

The crash remains under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.
