A former assistant track coach at the Palmetto Ridge High School has been arrested on a warrant for unlawful sexual activity with a minor.

The Collier County Sheriff’s Officer says Amed Garriga-Smith, 37, had sex with a student in 2021. Garriga-Smith was arrested on Thursday at his home on Petal Drive.

Deputies say the victim’s mother contacted the sheriff’s office on Sept. 22, after her daughter had told her about a recent sexual encounter with Garriga-Smith. An investigation uncovered text messages from the victim’s phone that supported that there had been a sexual encounter between Garriga-Smith and the victim at Garriga-Smith’s home.

Detectives say Garriga-Smith also confessed while being interviewed.
