Fort Myers Mayor Kevin Anderson was hospitalized after a fall on Saturday that left him with a broken leg.

Mayor Anderson confirmed that he slipped and fell in a grocery store and broke his femur. The mayor told WINK News that he was hospitalized as a result. Anderson underwent surgery to repair his broken femur and is now recovering.

This happened Saturday afternoon at a Publix. Mayor Anderson was on his way to a city firefighter’s funeral when it occurred.

In a statement, the mayor wrote:

I appreciate all the calls, texts, emails, and FB posts. Dr. Carmelo Guzman of Orthopedic Specialists and his team did a great job repairing a broken femur. While a little sore, I am in good spirits and on the long road to recovery.

WINK News spoke to Fort Myers City Councilman Liston Bochette about how the mayor is feeling now.

“Believe it or not, I’d sent him a text saying when is a good time to call you does not interrupt his rest. And he immediately called back from the hospital. If you wouldn’t know from his voice that he was in any distress. He had just come back from the first therapy session postoperative session,” said Councilman Bochette.

Bochette told us that two other city employees were at the Publix and witnessed the fall.

“One was actually in the same aisle, when the slip and fall occurred, and witnessed it and, again, having people around that know you and care for you, rather than just stand back, expedited his transfer to the hospital. He did say that when he hit the ground, he knew he wasn’t getting up very quick,” Bochette said.

So, what does this mean for Fort Myers City government? “We have a safety net. I was appointed Mayor Pro Tem. So, it will fall on me to coordinate with him and fill that gap until he’s back on board,” said Bochette.

No one knows how long the mayor will be out of commission for now.
