The Collier County Sheriff’s Office has arrested an East Naples Middle School student for bringing a BB gun to school.

The 12-year-old could be charged with a felony after bringing the gun, showing it to classmates and speaking of shooting a teacher.

At least three fellow students told a Collier County Youth Relations deputy that the student had a BB pistol in his backpack. The student was in the cafeteria showing the gun to other students as well. He said he planned to point it at or even shoot a teacher.

The Youth Relations deputy found the black Colt brand Defender BB pistol in his backpack. The pistol was loaded with a CO2 cartridge and steel BB pellets. The .177-caliber BB pistol displayed a warning on the side which read, in part: “Not a toy. Misuse may cause serious injury or death.”

This BB pistol has a velocity of 440 feet per second and a “danger distance” of 325 yards.

The student was taken into custody and will be taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center. This student was arrested and he could face charges for possession of a weapon on school grounds.

“This arrest enables us to connect this individual with mental health services and available resources,” Collier County Sheriff Kevin Rambosk said.
