A 24-year-old Port Charlotte woman has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for aggravated child abuse.

Crystal Ashley Carrasquillo was set to go to trial in August but made an open plea to the court.

According to the state attorney’s office, Carrasquillo physically abused a 3-month-old baby repeatedly.

The crime was uncovered in 2018 when the child was taken to the hospital because of trouble breathing.

Doctors discovered the child had numerous broken bones in various stages of healing.

Carrasquillo’s sentencing in court was not uneventful.

Carrasquillo’s husband Gregory A. Carrasquillo was tased and arrested during the sentencing after he jumped the gallery bar to try to talk to his wife.

Prior to jumping the bar, Gregory Carrasquillo kept interrupting proceedings, including asking to speak with the judge.

Carrasquillo remains at the Charlotte County Jail.
