The Collier County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a man they say stole more than $25,000 from his former employer who didn’t discover the theft until after the man left.

The Economic Crimes Section detectives arrested 72-year-old David Mowery of Naples on Tuesday.

Deputies say Mowery, who worked as a bookkeeper for a local landscaping company, had access to bank accounts, checks, and the bookkeeping software. They say after Mowery left the position, the employer discovered that Mowery had been altering records to embezzle funds.

Deputies say he was skimming checks, stealing petty cash and miscoding vendor entries. They say the theft took place from April 2016 to November 2018.

Mowery is accused of stealing $25,895.16. He was arrested and released on $20,000 bond on Tuesday. Mowery is facing charges of grand theft over $20,000 and a scheme to defraud $20,000-$50,000.
