Cape Coral approves sidewalks for eastern end of Kismet Parkway

It’s a victory for bikers and walkers in Cape Coral near Kismet Parkway at NE 17th Place who have fought for sidewalks and bike trails for years.

Near Busy Del Prado Boulevard is where the sidewalk ends,
and the worry begins,
for bicyclists and pedestrians alike.

For about half a mile from NE 17th Place to NE 24th Avenue, there is no sidewalk, no barrier, and for many people, there is no option but to cross the road.

Kristan, a Cape Coral resident, says she’s always busy. “I run my own lawn and landscape business so in the winter times that doesn’t always cut the bills, so you have to get a second job.”

She bikes to work and doesn’t want to keep worrying about being hit by a car every time she bikes to work.

“Cars are just buzzing by they have no care whatsoever for anybody else even other motorists and cars. It’s just really a dangerous situation,” Kristan added.

For Devantae Morton, plans to create a separate bike and walking trail along the stretch of Kismet Parkway is a lifesaver for her and many others.

Morton explained, “You know, I mean because, without that, it’s more like a freeway than like a neighborhood.”

Pam lives nearby, and said, “I think it would be perfect. Everybody, kids would be safer and you know, with the school buses and everything. You got crazy drivers out there.”

The project was approved by the city council Wednesday evening, and neighbors say the entire area will be enhanced and the neighborhood, subsequently, made safer.
