Even more sand is being brought by truck to Naples Beach. Sadly, there’s really no good way to get it there. Neighbors are tired of the noise, and it’s creating traffic.

For the people who live along Fourth Avenue North in Naples, their new reality is noisy. From Monday to Saturday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., trucks are going in and out of their neighborhood. John Hushon lives there. “We typically walk or ride or bikes every day for exercise. Almost always, those walks or bike rides are interrupted by fairly heavy truck traffic,” Hushon said.

That heavy dump truck traffic used to roll along Mooring Line Drive in Naples. It disrupted neighbors like Linda and Duane Black. “You hear the rumble, and they’re loud, and then you feel it when they go by,” they said.

Complaints about the noise, traffic, and dangers for pedestrians and bicyclists prompted city leaders to change the dump trucks route to the beach. Those trucks are hauling thousands of tons of sand that crews will use to rebuild Collier County’s beaches.

For the Black family, this is good news. “I think it’s always a good idea to share the load, share the wealth. Whatever you want to call it. Mooring Line Drive had a big impact on the last sand haul,” said Linda.

The new route did not solve the problems. It simply moved them to another place. Now the issue is in front of NCH Baker Hospital. Raymond Christman is a Naples City Councilman. “The concerns were that there would be significant truck traffic,” Christman said.

“Leaving the city on 4th Avenue North, which is where the entrance to the hospital emergency room and certain other facilities are located. And, obviously wanted to be sure that we would not be creating a potential conflict in that regard,” said Christman.

So far, there hasn’t been much pushback on the new route, Naples City Council says. The good news is that people who live there only have to endure this noise and traffic for about another week.
