Optimism, self-confidence and connection to the community, that’s what students at FGCU learned Monday in their news literacy class.

Lauren Lindstrom and Oscar Perry Abello joined the session via Zoom.

The lesson – solutions journalism.

The approach can have positive psychological effects on news readers and viewers.

The goal is to report on the ways people respond to problems.

Perry Abello a reporter for nextcity.org said, you can “Watch solutions grow or evolve over time, and if they fail, you can write about how or why they failed.”

Lindstrom, a reporter for the Charlotte Observer said, “We as reporters are not saying this is what governments or non-profits or whomever should do, but we’re just kind of laying out for you what is possible and how successful it has been in other places.”

Students learned about creating a positive mindset shift while finding solutions to issues like housing equity.

WINK news investigative reporter Céline McArthur also served as moderator for part of Monday’s discussion about collaborative and effective social change.
