One man has died after a shooting at a mobile home park on Friday night. This happened at the River’s Edge Community in North Fort Myers.

Neighbors say they heard about five gunshots. The community is located along North Tamiami Trail, right across the Edison Bridge. One woman who lives there says she no longer feels safe in her home after hearing the gunshots.

That community feels shaken up after bullets fly near their homes. Samantha Taylor told WINK News she was in her kitchen when she heard those gunshots. “I was home, and I heard four bangs, then a pause, then another bang,” Taylor said.

She decided to call 911. “They were like, ‘well which side is it coming from?’ I was like, I said, ‘it’s closer up front,'” said Taylor.

“I was standing in my kitchen when it happened, so I knew it was coming from that angle. But it was so shocking to hear it…” said Taylor.

Neighbors say this was a shocking scene because, typically, the community is peaceful and quiet. “I have neighbors with dogs, and you know we don’t even hear anything. There’s no arguing. There’s no fussing, no anything, not even loud music,” Taylor said.

That peace is why she decided to move there. Unfortunately, that peace was disturbed on Friday night. “Safe is not the word for how I left last night,” said Taylor.

Lee County Sheriff’s deputies said that they found a man with multiple gunshot wounds when they arrived at River’ Edge. That man was then taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“I don’t even know the person, but my heart aches, actually for both, because one person lost their life and one person took a life – and being the mother of five and the grandmother of three, that was somebody’s son. Somebody’s brother, uncle possibly died who died last night. And the person who did it is somebody’s child,” Taylor said.

Taylor hopes that the person who fired these shots comes forward.

Deputies say this investigation remains active.
