David Kolenda (Credit: Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office) A woman is found shot several times inside a car on Sunday. The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office says David Kolenda, 63, was the shooter. He was tracked down and arrested nearby. The shooting took place Sunday night on the 400 block of Taylor Road in Charlotte County. The sheriff’s office has not said if Kolenda and the victim knew each other, but detectives are calling the killing domestic in nature. Former police officer and FGCU professor David Thomas says domestic incident calls tend to increase near the holidays. “The national hotline, their own domestic violence is 20,000 calls a day,” said Thomas. “We’re encroaching Christmas, and Thanksgiving is getting here. And it is a prime time for domestic violence.” The shooting has left the surrounding community in shock. David Rivera never thought about violent crime in his neighborhood, until he had no choice. “It’s typically a safe neighborhood. I never knew that a murder could occur here,” said Rivera.
