Monday, Cape Coral Police Department arrested a 15-year-old boy and a 16-year-old boy after receiving a call about a vehicle burglary in progress.

Investigators say they were both trying to steal from several vehicles in the area by checking if car doors were unlocked.

According to CCPD, police responded to the call in the 2800 block of SW 25th Place, where the owner of a vehicle says he noticed one of the teens outside his van. He asked what they were doing, and he heard his van door slam shut as another teen ran from the van and both teens ran away from the owner’s property.

The owner got into his van and followed the two teens, tracking them down and asked them what they had stolen from his vehicle. Police say the 16-year-old pulled out a folding knife toward the owner while his window was rolled down. There was no further information about how that interaction went, but there was no report of injuries.

Eventually, CCPD patrol and K-9 officers put up a perimeter in the neighborhood and found the accused teens hiding on a dock behind a home under construction.

The 15-year-old was taken into custody, while the 16-year-old jumped into a residential canal and tried to swim away and escape police, but he swam directly into a perimeter unit, and police arrested him.

Both suspects face charges for burglary of a conveyance. One of the teens also faces a charge for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

They were both taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center of Lee County.
