Over the course of the pandemic, more than 1,100 families lost loved ones to the coronavirus in Lee Health hospitals, and those losses also impacts the lives of the staff who cared for them.

“Mentally exhausting,” Dr. James Kasiewicz said. “Physically exhausting but mainly mentally exhausting.”

Men and women on the front lines of the pandemic received a thoughtful tribute Thursday night when Fort Myers Police Department showed their appreciation outside Lee Memorial Hospital.

“Delta variant was horrible, and we know what you all went through,” FMPD Lt. Roger Valdivia said. “Everyone is willing to give, and everyone knows you all are working hard.”

FMPD did something similar in the early days of the pandemic. Officers want to remind nurses and doctors they are here for them.

“Going back to 2018 when [Officer Adam Jobbers-Miller] was shot, this hospital was tremendous to us,” Valdivia said. “Gave us seven days, seven additional days with Adam and the family, and agency will always be grateful.”

“We need to look forward to things,” Kasiewicz. “The community really cares about us.”
