Eagle Scout Jared Marques received merit badge 138 Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2021. Credit: Shared with WINK News. A Southwest Florida teenager achieved a major milestone when he received his last merit badge as an Eagle Scout. Jared Marques doesn’t like the spotlight, but he loves the Boy Scouts, and he’s been living and breathing it since he was 10 years old. The 17-year-old is now among 474 scouts in the history of Boy Scouts of America to get all of his merit badges — a total of 138. “For two years straight, I did merit badges — 2 to 4 merit badges for every weekend — for two years straight in Missouri,” Marques said. “He set a goal when he was young,” father Tony Marques said. “Working with him and watching dedication makes me very proud.” His achievement was not reached without the help from his family. They told him they would get him wherever he needed to go to reach his goal. “I did a lot of the driving and sleeping on the ground, but really, the hard work was done by Jared,” Tony said. “I deserve a nice air mattress,” he added with a laugh. It brought him to Florida for scuba diving and New Mexico to get his last badge for backpacking. Marques received his last badge Wednesday night at North Collier Fire Control and Rescue District, closing one chapter and opening another. Marques is now the example for his scoutmaster. “The average eagle scout earns 20-40 merit badges,” scoutmaster Scott Moore explained. “There’s only 21. They have to earn to get rank and other responsibilities, but average 20-40, and he did 138. He’s the example now.” Marques is a high school senior and is dual enrolled at FSW. He’s looking forward to college next year and hopes to delve into the forensic science field. “Still want to help out fellow scouts and be a mentor to them and help them through program and help push them do whatever they can,” Marques said.
