Crews are investigating what caused a home to erupt in flames near downtown Fort Myers early Tuesday morning.

Firefighters responded to the house fire on McGregor Boulevard, just south of Fort Myers Country Club and north of Colonial Boulevard and the Midpoint Bridge, shortly after midnight. Fort Myers Fire Chief Tracy McMillion confirmed a neighbor’s report that nobody was home, and further stated that no fire crew members or civilians were injured while putting out the fire.

The owners of the house spoke to WINK News and confirmed that they bought it around two weeks ago, and that they woke up to learn their new house was on fire by tuning into WINK’s morning broadcast.

It remains unclear what sparked the fire.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
