Golisano Children’s Hospital is dealing with an uptick in the number of pediatric patients battling COVID-19.

The number of patients this year is much higher than last summer when Southwest Florida experienced another surge in cases. As of Friday, the hospital reported they had eight patients ranging from 22 months to 20 years old. Three of the patients are in the ICU.

A year ago, Golisano treated about six COVID patients for a day or two, but now they’re averaging eight patients a week.

Children are experiencing symptoms like fever, cough, and difficulty breathing.

Dr. Emad Salman said if your child is eligible to get vaccinated, he recommends getting the shot before the start of the new school year.
