Man searching for rightful owner of lost Marine Corps dog tags

Editor’s Note: Since 2015, Social Security numbers are no longer used on dog tags. Instead, it includes a DoDID number. This can be recognized by the 10 digits, rather than 9, and the absence of spaces between numbers.

A Cape Coral man needs your help tracking down the owner of a set of U.S. Marine Corps dog tags.

Ed Cabanas said he found the dog tags on a playground at Jim Jeffers Park in Cape Coral.

They were found on a green lanyard with the name K. Hernandez on them.

Cabanas said finding the owner is personal to him, “I am a military veteran from the air force and I have my own dog tags and they are a treasure of mine. They’re something that I keep as a keepsake for when I served and these are somebody’s dog tags, actual dog tags from the Marine Corps I hope they come forward and claim them.”

Cabanas said he’s been searching to find the owner for about a month now – with no luck.

He hopes that showing them on the news can help locate the rightful owner.
