Honey, the dog. Credit: WINK News. A woman’s service dog had a near death experience when an alligator lunged for it off the Sanibel Causeway recently. Jeannie Pitts was throwing the frisbee with her dog, Honey, when a gator splashed out of the water. Pitts grabbed her smaller dog, and Honey was able to run away from the gator unscathed. Luckily, all three got away without injuries. But it’s now something Pitts says she is wary of and wants others to be aware of too. “He’s my service dog, so he saves my life a lot,” Pitts said. “So it would’ve been devastating, so I’m just happy that it turned out the way that it did, and I just want to let other people know that they’re actually there right off the causeway, and that, you know, for people to be careful.” Pitts says you never know what’s lurking below the water’s surface. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says you can call its nuisance alligator hotline at 866-392-4286 if you are concerned about a gator. MORE: FWC – Alligator Management Program
