Major DNS service outage briefly takes major websites offline

A major Domain Name System (DNS) suffered a partial outage Thursday which took many major websites offline for about an hour.

Akamai says the incident was with their Edge DNS Service.

According to the initial report on the company’s website, “We are actively investigating the issue. If you have questions or are experiencing impact due to this issue, please contact Akamai Technical Support. In the interest of time, we are providing you the most current information available, which is subject to changes, corrections, and updates.”

It was also reported 911 services temporarily went down in some U.S. cities.

Some of the websites that were impacted included:

  • Delta Airlines
  • Airbnb
  • Orbitz
  • British Airways
  • Southwest Airlines
  • Air France
  • FedEx
  • UPS
  • Costco
  • Home Depot
  • Kroger
  • Bed, Bath & Beyond
  • Marshall’s
  • Dollar Tree
  • Walt Disney World
  • PlayStation Network
  • Taco Bell
  • KFC
  • Pizza Hut
  • The Gap
  • PetsMart
  • And many more
