Trash piles up in Cape Coral neighborhood

Cape Coral’s trash troubles have extended, as some streets are not seeing their trash being taken away even on their normal pickup days.

One person says his trash pickup is normally on Wednesdays. He put his trash out the night before expecting Waste Pro to come, but that didn’t happen. Now, his trash is piling up.

Jose Torna says his trash has been sitting along his curb for about a week. Needless to say, he’s not too thrilled about that.

“In my garage, I have four bags double-bagged because I have no container to put it in and it’s just nasty,” Torna said.

Torna said that last week, he and one other neighbor were the only people who put out their trash for their regular Wednesday pickup. He claims that Waste Pro never came.

“My garbage, I had to put a brick block on top of it because it’s been kind of windy and so it opens up the top and the garbage spills over and we don’t want any of that,” he said.

Trash bins lined his street Tuesday.

“Most of the people here in the neighborhood did not know and neither did I, I just put it out just because,” Torna said. “They did not know that Waste Pro is going to continue on with the regular pick-up schedule so that was very confusing.”

The City of Cape Coral said it saw an increase in the number of calls to the 311 hotline about missed trash pick-ups. Waste Pro told WINK News that service was not impacted by the Fourth of July holiday.

Some people also opted not to place their trash out due to Elsa. More importantly, flooding prevented them from reaching some of the neighbors, one of them being Sharon Diersing.

She was also supposed to have her trashed picked up Wednesday.

“It’s been sitting here at the street since last Thursday and hopefully they’ll come on Wednesday… hopefully,” Diersing said.

Waste Pro says crews are working hard to remove all the extra trash throughout the city.
