Gov. Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency for coastal counties in Southwest Florida ahead of Elsa.

DeSantis said he signed an order of declaration Saturday morning ahead of a press conference in Surfside where a building collapsed June 24.

“I think what we are dealing with is a strong tropical storm right on the edge of a Category 1 hurricane but fortunately has gone just a little bit below,” DeSantis said.

In Southwest Florida, the emergency order applies to Lee, Charlotte, Collier and DeSoto counties.
