Hughes served as mayor of Fort Myers Beach and on town council as well as other leadership roles in the community, according to a Facebook post by the Town of Fort Myers Beach. “It is with an extremely heavy heart that I have to announce that Mayor Dan Hughes passed away this evening at his home surrounded by his friends and family,” said Town Mayor Ray Murphy. The Town of Fort Myers Beach recently celebrated Hughes with a proclamation in his honor on June 7. According to the proclamation, Hughes served on the local planning agency and was instrumental in formulating a comprehensive plan for Fort Myers Beach and its land development code.
