A Golden Gate Estates man was arrested for attempting to rob a Publix on Wednesday, deputies said.

According to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office, Dylan Wiebke, 28, entered the Publix along Collier Boulevard and approached a cashier, handed her a soda and asked for a packet of cigarettes before telling her to open her drawer and hand him the register money.

He had his hoodie cinched around his face.

The cashier asked Wiebke if he was armed before she fled and told a coworker to call 911. Wiebke fled the store with the soda and cigarettes with him, the sheriff’s office said, adding that he was carrying a black duffel bag.

Deputies arrived and searched for the area and found the duffel bag just north of the Publix parking lot near the Pine Ridge Road entrance.

A short time later, a homeowner living near 11th Avenue Southwest, south of the Publix, told deputies he saw a man sitting in his parked Subaru and yelled at the men who fled.

Home surveillance footage captured Wiebke entering the Subaru.

Wiebke was in custody about an hour later.

He faces charges of attempted robbery, retail petit theft and resisting arrest without violence.
