Flights in and out of Southwest Florida International Airport are seeing delays and even some cancellations due to severe weather.

These delays and cancellations could continue to increase. So far, more than 40 flights have been canceled and 60 have been delayed due to the storms.

Long lines formed of travelers waiting, hoping they would get to leave.

Antonina Randazzo is from New Jersey. “We got here around 11 for our flight at 1:45, and then it was delayed to 2:30,” Randazzo said.

Ben Penner is from California. “We got here to fly out at about 12 o’clock and we’ve been here ever since,” said Penner. “I think it got delayed at least five or six times, then 5:30.”

Then his flight was canceled. “They finally canceled it and pushed us to have to rebook,” he said.

Others weren’t even told when they’d get to leave. Bernadette Troy is from Chicago. “We have no idea when we’re going to be out of here,” she said.

The Troy family desperately wanted to get home to Chicago. They even discussed getting RV and driving back.

“It’s her birthday so we want to get home see the kids,” said David Troy.

“It’s incredibly frustrating. I want to go home. I want to go to Chicago. Florida’s great but it’s not home. It’s not home,” Bernadette said.

A spokesperson for RSW told WINK News that the weather has impacted flights at multiple airports across the state and RSW is no exception.

Airlines are working to get planes off the ground and back in the sky. They say it’s a big job with so many grounded flights.
