Fort Myers man sentenced to more than six years for AR-15 possession as convicted felon

A U.S. District Judge has sentenced a Fort Myers man to six years and 11 months in prison for possession of a firearm as a convicted felon.

28-year-old Kwameaine Rashad Brown was ordered to forfeit his AR-15 in addition to the 87 rounds of ammunition in his possession.

Court documents say that on the night of December 31, 2019, Fort Myers Police observed Brown via city surveillance openly carrying the gun and placing it in the trunk of his car. He then got into the vehicle which was later stopped by FMPD patrol officers.

The gun was identified as Springfield Armory Saint 5.56 mm AR-15 pistol, equipped with a high-capacity drum-style magazine and was loaded with 80 rounds of ammunition.

At the time of the stop, Brown was a convicted felon and therefore was prevented from possessing a firearm or ammunition under federal law.

Brown plead guilty to his possession of a firearm as a convicted felon charge on December 21, 2020.

In addition to Fort Myers Police, The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigated this case.

This case is also part of The Department of Justice’s “Project Guardian,” an initiative to reduce gun violence and enforce federal firearms laws.
