The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a road rage incident that was reported Monday morning on I-75 near mile marker 149 in North Fort Myers.

The FHP confirmed that two vehicles were involved.

The driver of a Toyota SUV was visibly shaken after someone fired at least four shots at their vehicle on I-75. The driver drove to the rest area near the FHP station off Daniels Parkway after the shooting.

Bullet holes can be seen in the side of this silver Toyota: one by the front headlight, one above the tire, and another in the door. A bullet also went through the back window.

The shooting happened around 6 a.m. while people were on the interstate for their morning commute.

“I’m kind of speechless. You just never think people shoot guns at cars,” said Ken Miller, an Uber driver who lives in Fort Myers.

Greg White, a driver and gun owner, said he cannot believe this happened. “Get out of here, that’s insane! That’s not OK!”

He said that no matter how frustrated you get, you cannot start shooting at people. “It is a very, very big responsibility being a gun owner. You don’t know where the bullet is going to travel and then obviously other vehicles around could have innocent bystanders and children. That’s insane.”

Troopers and their crime scene investigators were examining the car using rods, putting them inside the bullet holes to trace their trajectory. They also took pictures and bagged evidence.

Lt. Greg Bueno said that firing shots on the interstate cannot happen. “You have to pack a lot of patience to drive a car and if your frustrations of traffic volume or if someone does something to cut you off or something like that, the remedy of that is to get away from that person.”

State crime lab technicians closely examined the truck and all of the evidence collected in hopes that it could lead them to the shooter.

As of Monday afternoon, the shooter is still out there.

We asked if troopers have a description of the person, the gun or the car, but they’re not ready to put that information out there.

It is possible that the occupants of the two cars were shooting at each other, but this has not been confirmed by the FHP.

The occupants of each vehicle are currently considered suspects.
