A home invasion in Fort Myers led to a dog being shot and two unknown suspects running from the scene Wednesday morning.

Fort Myers Police Department says Joann Cook was awake when intruders broke into her Thomas Street home.

“He jumped on top of the bed and grabbed me by my head,” Cook told WINK News. “I guess he must have hit me because blood was running down my face, and I didn’t even know it until somebody told me.”

Suspects shot Cook’s dog, and her pet was taken to a veterinarian by animal control to be treated. It was still with the vet Wednesday night.

“That boy didn’t have to shoot him like that at all,” Cook said.

Both suspects have not been found, but police say they are searching for two men wearing all black, as well as either face masks or ski masks. They escaped with a purse belonging to Cook.

During the initial response to the scene, a sergeant with FMPD said the victim was not cooperating, leading police to believe she and one or both of the suspects might know each other. Investigators believe this was an isolated, targeted incident.
