There is a push by a faith-based group to outlaw abortion in the City of Naples.

The Naples City Council on Monday listened to a proposal by pro-life group Action for Life during a workshop for the city to become a “sanctuary for the unborn.”

“My daughter, she’s my miracle,” Nancie Zecco said. “Because after that, I didn’t think I could have children.”

Zecco says motherhood for her has been filled with both joy and pain. “I lost nine babies.”

That’s one reason she’s in support of a new push to outlaw abortions in the city, she says.

“When you’re trying so hard to have a child, OK, someone that’s just throwing one away.”

The president of Action for Life brought the idea to council, an ordinance that would declare Naples as a “sanctuary for the unborn.”

“I don’t think that public officials should get to decide for us,” Davina Mikels said.

Mikels believes if it’s her body, it’s her choice.

“There’s special circumstances I would say … and things that maybe have happened,” Mikels said.

Mikels says that with recently adopted COVID-19 laws such as the city’s mask mandate, “Some of them have overstepped their boundaries, and we need to have more voice for the people and not just for the public officials.”

More than a dozen cities have adopted the ordinance in Texas.

The Naples City Council did say it will consider discussing it further in the future, but right now the council wants to focus on healing the community during the pandemic.
