A head-on crash involving three vehicles on Veterans Parkway in Cape Coral sent three people to the hospital Monday morning.

All lanes of the parkway have reopened between Santa Barbara and Skyline boulevards after being shut down for about three hours.

“I was sitting on my lanai and I heard this bang,” said Joanne Keith. “I took my bike and I walked over the berm and I saw the whole front of the car, the engine was gone.”

Kelci Scott watched from a distance as first responders got to work.

“I watched them try to pry the door of the car that was in the median. Watched every ambulance come up, the cops swarm.”

Cape Coral police said late Monday that the driver of a sedan heading east on Veterans crossed the grassy median and drove into oncoming traffic that included an SUV. They collided head-on, and a third vehicle, a van, was struck by the SUV as it spun.

The driver of the sedan suffered life-threatening injuries, according to police. His condition was unknown late Monday.

The drivers of the SUV and van had non- life-threatening injuries but were taken to a hospital for treatment.

Police say whether drugs or alcohol were involved is still being investigated.
