Driver flees after striking bicyclists in Alva, killing 1

A driver struck a pair of bicyclists in Alva on Sunday morning, killing one before leaving the scene, troopers say.

The Florida Highway Patrol says the crash happened at 8:30 a.m. on North River Road just west of Sands Drive.

The bicyclists were traveling in a group eastbound on N. River Rd. when they were struck from behind.

A 64-year-old Fort Myers woman was killed and a 49-year-old Bonita Springs woman was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital with serious injuries, according to the FHP.

The vehicle that struck the pair left the scene. No description of the vehicle or its driver has been given.
