One of the biggest names and biggest contributors to Southwest Florida has died.

On Wednesday, Sam Galloway Jr. passed away at age 76 unexpectedly, friends told us. His father founded the car dealership that bears the family name, Sam Jr. made it the mega dealership as we know it today.

Galloway also made a name for himself because of his generosity to people in the region. He worked tirelessly to provide meals for people faced with food insecurity.

“Sam cared about people in a way that we can all learn from,” said Sarah Owen, the president and CEO of Southwest Florida Community Foundation. “I don’t think you can capture his legacy in just a few words because he meant so many different things to so many different people as a business owner, as a community advocate, as a friend.”

Galloway was one of the founding members of Community Cooperative.

Sam Galloway Jr. leaves behind his wife and three children.
