The threat of people trying to steal your money at gas pumps is rising.

Lee County Sheriff’s Office says there is an increase in skimmers. We were alongside deputies Thursday as they inspected hundreds of pumps in the county.

Eddie Alfonso takes extra steps to make sure he’s protected when he pays at the pump after he fell victim to a credit card skimmer once before.

“I have at a grocery store many years ago,” Alfonso said. “Due to the new technology, you know, they getting better and better.”

Alfonso said he’s not alone.

“Before I enter my card, I checked to see if the tape is on the side and also try to get a pump that’s fairly close to the store entrance,” Bob Blankenship said.

LCSO was out inspecting gas pumps, hoping to give drivers peace of mind.

“They always have to work ahead of them, to figure out what’s the latest they’re using,” Alfonso said.

“I personally think it’s great,” Blankenship said. “I’m glad they can do it.”

Some skimmers use Bluetooth technology to snatch information from the pump.

That’s why the Lee County Board of County Commissioners in 2019 passed an ordinance requiring gas station owners to install technology on all pumps to prevent people from planting skimming devices.

While it’s helped, it doesn’t totally eliminate the problem. The safest option is paying with cash.

Anyone whose information has been stolen or suspect a skimmer at a gas pump can file a complaint by calling 1-800-HELP-FLA (435-7352)
