A Southwest Florida police department received a top honor on Thursday.

Attorney General Ashley Moody recognized the Punta Gorda Police Department’s new program, the Veteran Crisis Assistance Team.

The team helps the police department effectively handle situations involving military veterans in need of assistance.

The Back the Blue Award is given based on extraordinary service to local veterans.

“Having a military member respond to another military member in crisis who is specifically trained on the resources in the community to help that veteran will go a long way,” said Moody.

The “V-Cat” team is made up of sworn Punta Gorda law enforcement officers who served or are currently serving in a branch of the United States Military.
