Gov. Ron DeSantis held a press conference Wednesday morning in Venice to announce a new COVID-19 vaccination site in Sarasota County. He also talked about the lack of vaccines flowing into Charlotte County.

DeSantis is hearing your frustration after months of calls, emails and letters. Charlotte County, which has the state’s second-oldest population, is frustrated over the number of vaccines it gets.

Charlotte was one of the first on the West Coast of Florida to get Publix, and I think that’s been helpful but we’re going to do more in Charlotte,” the governor said Wednesday in Venice.

WINK News told DeSantis about the frustration expressed by many seniors in Charlotte, and he said, “You can tell them we hear them, we’re acting, and I think you’re going to see that a lot of them are going to get shots very, very soon.”

DeSantis said he’ll be in Charlotte County on Thursday. He didn’t say where, but people in the Kings Gate senior community received a letter this week saying the governor will visit and bring along 3,000 vaccine doses.

Only residents of Kings Gate and nearby Port Charlotte Village and Maple Leaf Country Club can make appointments.

The three-day vaccination site at Venice Community Center began operating Wednesday and will administer 1,000 vaccines per day through Friday, Feb. 12, for a total of 3,000 vaccines for Florida’s seniors in the Sarasota County area.

Those appointments have already been filled through the Florida Department of Health in Sarasota County.
