A family in Southwest Florida is getting ready for a super time. They are returning to the Super Bowl for the third time.

For the family of wide receiver Sammy Watkins, this Super Bowl he’s going to with the Kansas City Chiefs is more special than the previous times.

With the potential for a Super Bowl victory repeat with the Chiefs, Watkins, a Fort Myers native and South Fort Myers High School alumnus, is on the verge of history.

“It’s hard to imagine that we’re here,” said James McMiller, Watkins’ father. “I have to pinch myself to see if I’m awoke.”

Watkin’s dad will be at the game in Tampa Bay to watch his son and the Chiefs defend their title Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

A year ago, Watkins made big catch after big catch to help KC beat the San Francisco 49ers. His dad told us that winning feeling lasted for weeks.

“I couldn’t sleep. I walked the house all night and started picking up the Airbnb; we had an Airbnb last year,” McMiller explained. “I started cleaning up and, like I said, it lasted all the way up to the pandemic.”

While concern for the coronavirus kept many families apart, the virus couldn’t separate Watkins from his mom and dad. In fact, they spent more time together this season than usual.

“We were able to see the grandkids more and see him more because we would go up and spend two weeks at a time, and then we would come home,” said Nicole McMiller, Watkins’ mother. “So we were able to spend a lot of family time together.”

This is the family’s third super bowl in four years. Jaylen Watkins helped the Philadelphia Eagles beat the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 52.

Super bowl 55 will be different than the rest.

“We couldn’t get many tickets because of the pandemic, and we have to take COVID tests prior to coming,” James said. “Sam is quarantined from us. We can’t see him.”

Watkins missed both recent playoff-game victories with the Chiefs because he’s has been out the last few weeks with an injured calf, but his dad told us Watkins will play in the Super Bowl.

Differences aside for this appearance compared to the last, the goal remains the same.

“God blessed us with one, so we’re going back to get another one,” Nicole said. “So I’m not letting anything rain on my parade.”
