One player taking part in the Fort Myers Tip-Off has tested positive for COVID-19. Gonzaga says that after yesterday’s victory, the player received the bad news. A station in Washington State posted a video of players celebrating in the locker room after the win without masks and not social distancing. There were two empty seats on Gonzaga’s bench today after two players went through COVID-19 protocol. This is because one of those players has already tested positive. Mark Few is the head coach of Gonzaga’s men’s basketball team. “We’ve had people out to quarantine due to contact tracing and we’ve had you know a positive test from an administration staff member and a test from a player,” said Few. This happened after the Bulldogs beat the Kansas Jawkhawks on Thanksgiving. A video was posted and has since been deleted, of the team celebrating Coach Few’s 600th win. Friday, neither Julian Strawther nor Dominick Harris was on the Gonzaga bench. Harris’s dad said on Twitter that his son was in quarantine after being in close contact with a player who tested positive. Here’s what we know: -Dominick Harris is out after close contact with a player who tested positive, according to Dom’s dad -Julian Strawther is not on the bench. I’ve accounted for everyone else. -If Strawther is the player who is positive, he is front and center in this video https://t.co/gmtsy72VAr — Brenna Greene (@BrennaGreene_) November 27, 2020 “You wait to get the news on the testing then you have to react and you have to stay agile and we followed the protocols of the tournament,” said Few. Gonzaga put out a statement saying the Florida DOH independently conducted contact tracing measures and the medical staffs decided that the game on Friday could be played. Although his team loss, Auburn’s head coach, Bruce Pearl liked the decision to play. “Whatever testing protocols we had that Gonzaga tested their players and the guys that were on the floor did not have COVID. We tested also so you do the best you can,” said Bruce Pearl. WINK News spoke to the organizer of the Fort Myers Tip-Off tournament about the decision to play. He said everything has been cleared by the medical professionals and protocols in place by the tournament were followed.
