A Fort Myers man was shot and killed early Tuesday on Palm Beach Boulevard, and it isn’t the first time his family is dealing with gun violence.

Stevie Gary was shot and killed early Tuesday in the Tice area. Gary is the nephew of a Southwest Florida anti-violence activist who lost her son to a deadly shooting in 2014.

Lee County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the 4900 block of Palm Beach Boulevard at around 12:30 a.m., and found Gary with gunshot wounds inside his car. He later died at the hospital.

Angela McClary believes her nephew was targeted.

“They knew who was in that car. They knew who they were gonna try to kill,” she said.

The sheriff’s office has not released any information on the suspects, only calling the shooting an “isolated incident.”

“We called him Mut Mut. We had been calling him since he was a baby. I don’t know who started that, his mom or dad or whomever. But he was a quiet kid, a very respectable kid. In my presence, he was the best kid you would want to have,” McClary said.

“He didn’t hang around the crowd. He always wanted to go fishing.”

A frantic phone call at 1 a.m. got McClary out of bed.

“When you get calls like that, you wonder what’s going on and you know that something has to be really bad. You don’t call me like that.”
