Cape Coral Mayor Joe Coviello pleaded no contest at a Tuesday hearing regarding a civil infraction filed against him for a Sunshine Law violation.

Coviello already completed a court-mandated ethics course on Oct. 2, and will now be fined $100. Adjudication was withheld.

“I have no comment for you,” Coviello said when asked about the hearing. “You need to report the facts.”

On Sept. 14, a civil infraction was filed against Coviello with the Lee County Clerk of Court. It followed a Florida Department of Law Enforcement Investigation into allegations of bribery and bid tampering by the city manager and the city’s business manager and an allegation involving quid pro quo conversations conducted by the Mayor.

No other criminal or civil charges against any other members of Cape Coral city staff have resulted from the investigation.

No one from City Hall or the city council would comment on the Sunshine Law fine.
