Big changes are planned for the Cape Coral Yacht Club: more parking, tennis courts and a splash pad, if the plan passes Monday’s vote.

The Cape Coral City Council will take a final vote on changes during a meeting scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

The city says the additions will make the yacht club more resort-like.

The big draw to the park is the beach, so the city wants to move some of the non-water-related activities, leaving more space to enjoy the river views.

Since the plan is to bring more people to the area, the city wants to increase parking with a three-story garage.

Some say the improvements aren’t necessary, and that $34 million could be put to better use. Many people asked by WINK News what they wanted to see improved identified the boat ramps.

In the revised plan the council is expected to vote on, the city would actually move the boat ramps to the yacht basin, expanding the stretch of beach.

“It’s a beach, I love the beach, I love the water and that’s why I’m here in Cape coral,” said resident Paula Salyards. “I imagine that we probably, with so many people being hurt because of the epidemic, I’m sure we need hospital expenses, people who are out of work need money. There’s bigger needs right now.”

“I’m all for it,” said resident Jimmy Kelley. “I’d like to see this thing get bigger and better. I mean, since I’ve been coming here for years, just this pier modification was awesome.”

There would be fees to use the new park amenities.
