Lee Health says they’ve never seen their supply of Type O positive blood so low — drawers of it are entirely empty.

The blood center at Lee Health gets inventory reports every day. This week, they were shocked to see many of their facilities had critically low levels of O positive, as it’s a blood type typically used for trauma patients and something they need to have an adequate supply of.

“Our inventory is done daily, and we like to have them at a set level, each of the facilities,” said Jeremy Puckett, blood center supervisor at Lee Memorial Hospital. “We handle all the distribution here, out of Lee Memorial. We saw one of our facilities at two units on the shelf and that’s a huge concern for us.”

To help get their supply back up, there will be a blood drive Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Summerlin Crossings Publix at 15880 Summerlin Road, Fort Myers.
