Deadline to apply for LeeCARES extended to Monday

Published: Updated:

Good news! The deadline to apply for LeeCARES assistance, originally set for Friday, has been extended until Monday, Sept. 21 at 5 p.m.

That money can go to rent, mortgage or utility bills, but you have to apply.

Robin Carson says the pandemic turned her life upside down and now, her bills are piling up.

She’s one of the thousands of people in Southwest Florida out of a job because of COVID-19.

“I’ve been scrambling for food, couldn’t pay any of my bills,” she said.

Despite her troubles, Carson has hope. Lee County has cash available to help people pay the rent, but you must apply.

“I’m still wondering if I’m going to end up on the street,” Carson said.

Giancarlos Castano with Goodwill’s Mobile Job Link said this could be the last time Lee County offers this kind of individual help.

“We have no knowledge about any of the programs, when they’re going to start or what kind of program they’re going to be so this is your chance to get help on mortgage or rent or electrical and for water,” he explained.

Next up for LeeCARES, help from non-profit and social service agencies. That’s because the county says the number of people asking for individual help is slowing down.

Carson is praying the county doesn’t forget about her.

“I’m sitting here just hoping they can take care of something,” she said.

Something to ease her stress and reduce that pile of bills.

The deadline to apply for LeeCARES individual assistance is now Monday at 5 p.m. The grant program for non-profits will launch Monday as well.
