While the typical holiday weekend has been dampened by the coronavirus pandemic, people made the most of it.

This weekend at Sun Splash Family Waterpark in Cape Coral, it looks a little different than usual.

“It’s nice to just be out for once,” said park visitor Arielle Theodore. “We’ve been stuck in the house for a couple of months so just to be out and get in the sun and just to be in the water and everything it’s good.”

She said if it wasn’t for the pandemic, they would “probably grilling with the family, but everyone’s quarantining now so we’re just taking safety precautions.”

Because of all the water, masks are optional at Sun Splash, and management encourages social distancing saying safety a is priority.

General manager Sandy Greiner said people appreciate her staff looking out for them, “Were disinfecting each and every life jacket just as it’s turned in.”

Her hope is that this holiday weekend crowd keeps coming back.

“Labor day weekend was honestly better than anticipated,” Greiner said. “You know, we’re only working at half capacity – which is 800 people but each day we’re reaching the 800 people.”

Theodore added, “I like the fact that they opened it and we’re able to just be around each other, but also practice the social distancing.”

That’s sometimes difficult when waiting in line to go down the water slide.

We know what there is to like about SunSplash, but  if you ask six-year-old Ava what she likes the least about being here today, she said, “It’s just that Nico is a cute cat and he misses us when we’re gone.”

Other than that, she’s just happy to be in the lazy river.

After Labor Day, Sun Splash will only be open on weekends through September 27.
